Martial arts used to be fun for me. Back when I had years and years to live. Lots of time to teach.
Now it’s a desperate hope that I can get the last few people who stand in front of me, over their humps.
No time to wait, I have no more time. No wonder these old teachers get grumpy with their students. Other people’s students, sure, lots of laughs, but not with their own.
And what is it that we’re trying to do? Most of the time it’s “help me pass my next grade.” Again, not fun. I’d much rather be teaching how to do anything else. Now that took me a long, long time to understand. It’s not about rank. It really isn’t.
Says the guy who got all the rank he’s going to accumulate.
Ah well. You can lead a horticulture, as Dorothy Parker said.
